GUIDELINES FOR VOCATIONAL ASSESSMENT

The inventories contained in this package enable you to describe yourself in ways that relate to the world-of-work. They do not provide answers; rather, they organize your knowledge and experience so that you and I can pinpoint relevant work-related patterns and themes. Vocational instruments are not meant to be a substitute for introspection, reflection and genuine self-knowledge. You may be asked to take vocational instruments that are either online, paper and pencil, or a combination of both.

In General
  • Find a quiet, comfortable place to work where you will not be disturbed.
  • Read directions carefully. Each inventory has its own set of instructions. Be alert to specific instructions throughout.
  • Work quickly and record your first response since it is usually the best indication of your true preferences.
  • Answer all questions in each instrument with the possible exception of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator where you may omit those you cannot answer truthfully.
  • Do not try to analyze the test while you are taking it. At times you may feel that you are answering the same question in contradictory ways. This is normal so don't worry.
  • When taking these tests, do not drink coffee, wine or start any of these instruments when you are overly tired, rushed, or feeling depressed.
  • Be sure to complete an entire inventory before taking a break.
  • When Taking Paper and Pencil Instruments
  • Use a #2 pencil. Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate.
  • Write your name on all self-scoring instruments and exercises.

  • Do not write in the test booklets.
  • Make your markings clear and dark. If you erase an answer, be sure to do so completely. Also, be sure to erase all stray marks.
  • Please return all test booklets and answer sheets to me.

A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT TAKING THE MBTI
  • The MBTI is asking you to state the preferences of your true self, not your ideal self. So, even if your choice tends to get you into trouble, (i.e. a preference for leaving things open-ended drives all of your friends crazy) choose it!
  • You may be asked to choose among 3-4 options of equal appeal. If undecided, choose the one that you prefer most often, even if it's only a very slight preference.
  • Most importantly, don't think of yourself as "me at work" vs. "me at home". Just answer as yourself and you'll be fine!
